ARKive: Images of Life on Earth

Type: images, audio, video

ARKive gathers together films, photographs and audio recordings of the world’s species. ARKive is generating a record of the world’s biodiversity making a key resource available for educators and the general public.


Barnacle Press

Type: images

Barnacle Press is a collection of vintage comic strips, all of which can be used for non-commercial activities under a Creative Commons licence.


BBC Archives

Type: audio, video

Collections of documents, audio and video recordings from the BBC archives, which can be linked to but not downloaded. Topics include world history and politics.


BBC/Open University Creative Archive

Type: video

This collection has downloadable video footage from Open University/BBC programmes. Available under the Creative Archive licence.


BFI InView

Type: video

A diverse collection of moving images on the theme of the changing social, political and economic environment of Britain in the 20th and into the early 21st century.


BFI Screenonline

Type: video

A collection of video clips illustrating Britain's TV and cinema history.


Blinkx

Type: video

Blinkx is a video search engine that uses speech recognition to filter its results. It indexes over 35 million hours of video. Most of the videos available are streamed, so they can be linked to, but not downloaded.


Box of Broadcasts

Type: video, audio

Box of Broadcasts (BoB) allows all staff and students to record any broadcast programme from over 60 TV and radio channels. BoB permits users to record and catch-up on missed programmes on and off-campus and edit programmes into clips, create playlists. Includes all BBC TV and radio content dating from 2007 (800,000+ programmes).


British Pathe film archive

Type: video

Free to use still and moving image files, for UK audience only. Over 3500 hours of British Pathe film footage, that covers news, sport, social history and entertainment from 1896-1970.


CartoonHub

Type:
images

Hosted by the British Cartoon Archive at the University of Kent. Has a catalogued database of over 90,000 British cartoons of social and political comment. The images on CartoonHub are under copyright, and may only be reproduced with the permission of the copyright owners, who can be contacted via CartoonHub.


Creative Commons Search

Type:
audio, images, video

A cross-site search enabling you to search a number of large database for material that can be legally re-used for free. Includes Google Images ans Flickr.


EU Screen

Type:
video

Contains over 14,000 items of TV footage from 17 European countries and is available via the EUscreen online portal for teaching, research and general interest. EUscreen provides a route into Europe’s television heritage with content dating from the 1920s to the present day.


Flickr Creative Commons

Type:
images

Flickr images that have a Creative Commons licence. Visitors to the resource can search for items with different types of licence. Each licence type is clearly explained, so you can search only for images that you will be able to legally use to fit your particular use case.

GlobalCast: Euromonitor's podcast series

Euromonitor International provides free business intelligence on industries, countries, and consumers. A user can download the podcast of your choice to your mp3 player, or listen to them on your computer.


Google Images

images

Google now has a "licensing filter" for its image search, so you can search for images that you can freely use. Note, however, that you may still need to attribute the work - check the specific licence that applies in each case to find out whether this is necessary.

Images in this collection are free for any personal, educational or commercial. Images can be modified in any way you see fit, and may be redistribtued in both digital and printed form.


Imperial War Museum Collection

The Imperial War Museum collection provides access to material covering a range of aspects of twentieth century conflict. The site includes detailed catalogue information for over 160,000 items.


Internet Archive

Type:
audio, video

This wide-ranging archive of online resources has sections for moving images and audio. The bulk of the content is in the public domain and therefore able to be used in teaching.


JISC MediaHub

Type:audio, images, video

The University Library has a subscription to the JISC MediaHub - a new multimedia platform offering a wealth of digital images, video and audio files accessible from a single interface. Most resources are free to download for use in teaching and research and can be displayed online via a secure network. Collections include: Newsfilm Online (ITN and Channel 4) and Getty Images.

National Archives: Public information films

An archive of streamed British public information films produced by the Central Office of Information (COI) covering the period 1945 to 2006.


OpenStreetMap

Maps can be used freely and adapted, as long as they are attributed properly, as explained on the copyright and licence page.


Pics4Learning

Type:
images

This is an image library for teachers and students. The images in the collection are all donated by students, teachers, and amateur photographers. Permission is granted for use of the images in print, multimedia, and video productions, within an educational setting.


Researcher's Guide to Television, Radio and Related Documentation Collections in the UK

Type:

This repository is run by the British Universities Film and Video Council (BUFVC). Each entry in the repository provides a description of the collection and full contact details (including e-mail and website addresses where available), access information, viewing facilities, copyright status of material held, catalogue systems and documentation.



TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design)

A collection talks recorded at the annual TED conference, which brings together high-profile speakers. The videos are subject to a Creative Commons license, so they can be freely shared and reused.

VADS the online resource for visual arts

VADS is an online resource for the visual arts. It has a considerable range of visual art collections comprising over 100,000 images that are freely available and copyright cleared for use in learning, teaching and research in the UK.


VLC

This is not a source of media resources, but a free video player, able to handle most video formats.


Wellcome Images

Type: Images

Images in this collection are made available under a Creative Commons Licence. Mostly high-quality images from the clinical and biomedical sciences.


WikiMedia Commons

Type:
images, audio, video

This is a repository of free multimedia content including photographs and multimedia files. Anyone is allowed to copy, use and modify any files freely as long as the source and the authors are credited.


Xpert Attribution Tool

Type:
images, audio, video

This tool can be used to search Creative Commons licensed resources. It offers the advantage of automatically adding attribution and licence information text to any image or video being used.
